Personal Work -
Children's Book Illustration
This was a collaborative effort. Joy and I worked together to create
an educational book that would excite children (and their parents) and
instill an interest to learn more about the creatures that she was writing
about.
The book is designed with an transparent overlay on which the illustration
resides. The poem is printed on the page below. It was an exciting challenge
to determine how to place and distort each of the various letters within the
poem to best define the shape of the animal.
Additionally, we planned on including other information at the back
of the book giving a brief written sketch about each of the anmals.
Additional information on the page -
The dark shading on the continent shows the habitat, the icon encourages shape
recognition, the paw prints and scientific name are also on the page.
Aardvark: a large nocturnal burrowing mammal that lives in the
sub-Saharan portion of Africa. It has a long snout, and tongue, powerful claws,
large ears, a heavy tail and eats termites and ants.
There are completed illustrations for an armadillo, a bandicoot, a camel,
a chameleon, a grizzly bear, a leopard, a peccary, a poison arrow frog, a
sidewinder, a springbok and a zebra. There are also three imcomplete illustrations
for a giraffe, a pangolin and a tapir.
